Two-wheel grinding, commonly known as centerless grinding, is a high-efficiency machining process that uses abrasive cutting to remove material from a workpiece without the need for spindles or fixtures to locate and secure it . Instead, the workpiece is supported between two rotary grinding wheels — a high-speed grinding wheel that removes material and a regulating wheel that controls the workpiece rotation and feed rate — while a work rest blade provides support from below . This configuration enables continuous, high-volume production of cylindrical components with exceptional roundness, straightness, and surface finish.

Unlike conventional cutting methods that rely on single-point tools or fixed centers, two-wheel grinding employs a unique three-component system — grinding wheel, regulating wheel, and work rest — to achieve micron-level precision through a combination of abrasive erosion and controlled workpiece positioning. The grinding wheel rotates at high speeds (up to 1250 RPM), while the regulating wheel, typically running at slower speeds (10–200 RPM), controls the rotational speed and axial feed of the workpiece . This makes it the definitive finishing solution for precision mold components — especially for cylindrical cores, ejector pins, guide pins, and other round parts that require tight tolerances, superior roundness, and mirror-like surface finishes in hardened materials.

Product Features

  • High Production Efficiency:Through-feed and plunge-feed modes enable continuous, high-volume production with minimal operator intervention — up to 100% productivity gains over conventional grinding
  • Superior Surface Finish:Achieves surface finishes as fine as Ra 0.2 μm directly off the machine — comparable to lapping and polishing
  • Material Versatility:Capable of grinding all common hardened tool steels, stainless steels, tungsten carbide, and powder metallurgy alloys
  • Tight Tolerances:Diameter tolerances down to ±0.002 mm (2 μm) for critical dimensions, with consistent repeatability across high-volume runs
